Dental Care

Oral health impacts your self-confidence and overall wellness. Good oral hygiene begins with home care:

  • Brush at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush.
  • Floss daily.
  • Follow your dentist’s advice to use other aids – mouth rinses, dental irrigation, or a mechanical toothbrush.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Visit us for regular check-ups.

The American Dental Association recommends that the average person see a dentist every six months; more often for patients who don’t practice good home care, have bleeding gums, smoke, like soft drinks, or have diabetes. We’ll work out a schedule to fit your situation.

A check-up at Platte Valley Dental Care includes much more than a cleaning. New patients are sometimes surprised at our thoroughness – Dr. Staci Blaha examines the face, neck, lymph nodes, saliva, bite, and movement of the jaw.

We will check your mouth (examination and possibly X-rays) for decay and loose teeth or fillings. We’ll evaluate the health of your gums, watching for signs of oral cancers, diabetes, even vitamin deficiencies. We’ll inspect appliances and check the points where your teeth make contact.

Please tell us if you wake up with a sore jaw, headache, earache, dizziness, neck or shoulder pain, or your partner complains that you grind your teeth at night. You may have temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
Nearly 85 percent of our patients have TMJ, but few realize it. We tend to clench and grind our teeth under stress, usually at night, applying as much as 300 pounds per square inch of bite pressure to the jaw. The results can be serious – wear and cracks in the teeth, arthritis, joint degeneration, and irritated muscles. Simply put, TMJ makes you chew with a limp!

Our treatment program begins with stress control (surgery is a last resort). We teach relaxation techniques and help you develop new habits to prevent grinding. Night guards can be worn to protect your teeth; anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, and physical therapy relieve symptoms.
