Dental Implants

At Platte Valley Dental Care in Platte City, Missouri, we often recommend dental implants to patients who have lost teeth due to trauma or extensive decay. In fact, most dentists (and patients, as well) prefer dental implants over any other method of restoring missing teeth.

What Happens When You Lose Your Teeth?

A few issues immediately come to mind. First of all, you are not able to bite or chew the way you once did. Second, you are probably going to try to keep people from noticing the gaps in your mouth. You will likely smile less, if at all, and might try to avoid opening your mouth much when speaking. Laughing in public will be a thing of the past.

There is a third consequence of missing teeth, though, and it is not something that most people typically think about. This is the fact that any teeth you have left are going to do their best to crowd into the gaps. It is your body’s natural response to missing teeth, but in this case, your body is a bit misguided. This can result in a bad bite, and can even lead to further tooth decay.

What Are Dental Implants?

The technology is fairly new. Dentistry has existed at least since the time of recorded history, but dental implants have only been in use for a little more than 40 years, and it is only in the past couple of decades that they have really come into their own.

So, what are dental implants? Let’s clear up a misconception first: dental implants are not artificial teeth that are placed in your jaw. The implant itself is a titanium screw, and that is what is placed in your jaw. Your new teeth are created by placing dental crowns on top of the implants. The implant replaces the root of your tooth, and the crown replaces the tooth itself.

Dental implants provide a permanent solution to missing teeth. Assuming that you care for your dental implants, they can last you a lifetime.

The Procedure

As you can tell from the foregoing, installing dental implants is a surgical procedure. At Platte Valley Dental Care, we do not do the surgery onsite. Instead, we will refer you to a dental implant specialist, and once your implants are in place and you have healed from the surgery, we will do the reconstruction work of creating and placing the dental crowns. Then you will have a fully functional set of teeth that will work every bit as well as the ones you were born with, if not better.
