The Basics of Getting a Dental FillingAre you thinking that the next time you come in to see us, you are likely going to need a filling? If so, then it is important that you know what to expect during the process. One of the best ways to keep yourself from developing any type of fear of the dentist is to know what to expect.

Having knowledge lets you remain strong when facing something that makes you nervous. Here is a quick, basic breakdown of what getting a dental filling is like.

Your Very First Dental Filling

If you need a filling, that means you have a cavity. This is when a small part of your tooth has a hole in it, typically from tooth decay. The first thing we need to do is to go through and remove that decay. We drill out the part of your tooth that was starting to decay.

This leaves the tooth healthier, but it has a hole left behind. Then, we take the filling material and shape it to the same size and shape of the hole we just drilled out. The material then goes into the hole and we smooth it out so that it matches up with your original tooth. We then cure the material and you are on your way.

When we put a filling in your tooth, we always make sure to use a numbing agent to help ensure you feel no discomfort. The process takes very little time, and helps to restore the health of your tooth in no time. Your fillings should last quite a long time with proper care, too.

Expect your filling to last you several years, so long as you keep it clean, we keep it maintained, and you never use it in a way that could harm your teeth. If you have any other questions, just give our office a call!
