Your Tongue Can Tell Us a Lot About Your Overall and Oral Health

Your Tongue Can Tell Us a Lot About Your Overall and Oral HealthYour tongue is just as important as your teeth or gums. A lot of people may not think about this part of the mouth on a regular basis, but when it comes to having a healthy mouth, your tongue is not something that should be neglected. When our hygienists provide a cleaning and then our dentists do an exam, we take the time to look at the many different areas of the mouth to ensure that you have the best oral hygiene.

Noticing Anything Wrong Inside the Mouth

If we notice anything wrong inside the mouth, it is because we have noticed something with the teeth, gums or even the tongue of the mouth. When the mouth is dry, this is usually something that we notice right away. Generally, this is something that needs to be addressed, as this can lead to decay and cavities in the mouth if it is not taken care of.

Some of the other things we look at are the color of the tongue and the appearance of the taste buds, as well as asking about any pain or discomfort that the person might feel when they talk, drink or chew on the tongue. If there are cuts, abrasions, or any other areas of concern, as well as patchy areas; we will address these concerns when we notice them during the exam that we do.

Knowing more about the inside of a mouth and being able to get the help needed from our office is going to help you address any issues before they become bigger. Having these issues taken care of sooner is always recommended. Call us today and we can schedule a time to have you come in and get the cleaning and exam needed for the health of your teeth, gums, tongue and overall mouth.
