Topical Fluoride Treatment Options for You

Posted on 11/25/2019 by Platte Valley Dental Care
Topical Fluoride Treatment Options for YouDepending on the year you were born, you may remember as a kid, the school nurse giving you a dose of fluoride. About an hour after eating lunch the nurse would come around with those little cups.

It is a common understanding that children's teeth are more prone towards cavities, by keeping their little mouths filled with fluoride we fight off cavities. What you may not know is depending on your oral health, you may benefit from fluoride as an adult.

What is Fluoride and Who Needs it?

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay. It aids in the growth of children's permanent teeth. We suggest Fluoride in adults if you fall victim to insufficient oral health.

For example, eating disorders, drug and/or alcohol use, active cavities, gum diseases, and any current dental procedures, all benefit from fluoride. Children need fluoride for vulnerable teeth. Adults are the same way when their teeth become vulnerable. Some fluoride can help save the day.

Topical and Systemic Fluorides

Topical forms of fluoride at home include your toothpaste and your mouthwash if chosen properly. Systemic fluorides are restricted at home to your tap water unless prescribed. When your oral health is suffering, we will recommend starting oral therapy with fluoride more aggressively. Our office can also apply fluoride to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish.

These treatments consist of a much higher level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpaste and mouthwash. Varnishes are painted on the teeth; foams are put into a mouth guard, which is applied to the teeth for one to four minutes; gels can be painted on or applied by using a mouth guard.

We hope this paints a picture of how beneficial fluoride is. Use it in all its forms.  If you have questions or problems in your mouth, call today and we can assist in your oral care.
