Stress is never helpful. Some people say that they work best under pressure, but are blind to the side effects of frequent or prolonged episodes of stress.
Stress can easily affect every aspect of your health, from oral health to physical health, and in some cases, mental health. This manifests in so many small ways that are negligible for most people, but when it all begins to add up, it has the potential to cause a of harm to your teeth and oral health in general.
How Does Stress Threaten Oral Health?
First of all, stress wears down the body and makes one weak. When you are weak physically, you are more prone to health complications that affect not only your teeth and gums, but overall health as well. This could lead to permanent tooth loss and gum disease.
There are other situations where stress leads individuals to grind their teeth wearing out the enamel or creating micro cracks and fractures in the teeth. Stress also causes inflamed gums and could lead to shifting of teeth, gum pockets, headaches and jaw damage.
What Can One Do To Avoid Stress Threatening Their Oral Health?
You can involve yourself in meditation practices, yoga or even physical activities, like going for a run or working out at the gym. This lowers your stress levels and helps you stay more even keeled. There are times when stress becomes so consuming, that we begin to lose track of time and have to take shortcuts throughout the day. Unfortunately, this often translates to having no time to brush your teeth or floss regularly.
