Do You Need to Take Your Complete or Partial Denture Out to Sleep?Dentures are useful to complete daily tasks with ease, peace of mind, and with visual appeal. Chewing, speaking, and smiling is improved after a fitting for denture. However, it is understandable that you might have some questions regarding when it is okay to keep the bridge on and when it needs to be taken off.

Why One Should Take off Bridges/Dentures Off Nightly

Dentures and partial dentures - and really any oral equipment - can initially be taxing on the mouth. Much like for any other part of the body, any work must be counterbalanced by adequate rest. For the gums and teeth, these oral devices can require an adjustment period, even if one does not feel it. While there is no clear and present threat or danger in leaving them on overnight a few times, it can be a good practice to remove them nightly.

The reason one should remove their dentures overnight is for general routine health. Much like brushing, flossing, or using mouthwash, removing your dentures is another form of oral health maintenance and good habit for keeping bacteria from growing and then causing an infection. Further still, your gums and teeth may need some rest after a day of use.

Caring For Dentures/Bridges At Night

Ideally, after every meal dentures and bridges should be carefully removed and rinsed. While this is not always possible, that is where nightly routines come to ensure proper cleansing. Proper night etiquette will typically involve a soft-bristled toothbrush. Any adhesives can be removed for the night, and the dentures or bridges should be rinsed and brushed gently. Avoid use of any toothpaste of other cleaners not recommended by us, as these can harm or prematurely wear down the dentures and bridges. You will also want to avoid excessively hot water, as this can warp certain appliances. For any questions or concerns about dentures and bridges, please do not hesitate to contact our office today.
