Why Does Your Tongue Get So Dirty?

Posted on 7/26/2021 by Platte Valley Dental Care
Why Does Your Tongue Get So Dirty? If you do not do so already, you should clean your tongue once a day after you brush your teeth. When you scrape your tongue, you will be surprised at how dirty it can get.

What Causes the Tongue to Get So Dirty?

The tongue's surface contains thousands of microscopic papillae, also known as taste buds. These microscopic projections capture the residue from food as well as plaque. Therefore, you should scrape your tongue after you brush your teeth. By scraping your tongue, you will remove the plaque and odor-causing germs that lead to halitosis or bad breath. You will also make the mouth cleaner and less susceptible to gum disease, gingivitis. Scraping the tongue should be added to an at-home dental routine of brushing the teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily.

One of the Benefits of Tongue Scraping

Not only can you remove unwanted bacteria, plaque, and food residue by scraping the tongue, but you will also enhance the taste of the foods you eat. Therefore, removing that excess dirt will make it possible for you to enjoy what you eat much more.

How Do You Scrape Your Tongue?

To scrape your tongue, place the tongue scraper about half-way back in the mouth. Do not go too far back, lest you experience a gag reflex. Gently glide the scraper forward and wipe it off with a tissue. You should use mild soap and warm water to clean the tongue-scraping tool as well.
