Tooth Extraction Aftercare: What to Do?

Tooth Extraction Aftercare: What to Do?Tooth extractions are a standard dental procedure, but they can still cause discomfort and complications. That is why it is important to follow your dentist's aftercare instructions carefully. Here are some things you should do after tooth extraction:

Take Pain Medication as Prescribed

After having a tooth pulled, you will likely experience pain and discomfort. Take any pain medication that your dentist prescribed as directed. If you do not have a prescription for pain medication, over-the-counter options such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help. Follow the directions on the package for how much to take and how often. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to your cheek for 20 minutes. Do this several times a day for the first few days following your surgery. You can also try holding a cold drink against your cheek.

Control Bleeding by Biting Down on Gauze

Once the tooth is out, there will likely be some bleeding. The gauze that your dentist puts in your mouth will help control the bleeding. Bite down on it firmly but not too tightly for 30 to 45 minutes or longer if necessary. You may need to change the gauze several times during this period. Once the bleeding has stopped, you can remove the gauze. To help keep your mouth clean and reduce swelling, rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution four times a day for the first few days after surgery. To make the solution, mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Be sure to rinse very gently, as vigorous rinsing can irritate the extraction site.

Eat Soft Foods

Eat soft foods and avoid chewing with the side of your mouth where the tooth was extracted for at least 24 hours. This gives your extraction site time to heal. Good choices include soups, yogurts, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and cooked vegetables. You should also avoid hot foods and drinks, and alcohol for at least 24 hours after surgery.

Visit our dental clinic as scheduled for a follow-up appointment. At this appointment, our dentist will check to ensure the extraction site is healing properly. If you have any questions or concerns, bring them up at this appointment.
