Composite Fillings
Platte City, MO

Cavities are the result of tooth decay. Plaque and bacteria both produce harmful acids that, when left on the surfaces of your teeth, can eat away at your enamel, weakening it. These weak spots eventually give way to the formation of small pits, or cavities. Untreated cavities continue to grow in size, compromising the structural integrity of your teeth as well as putting your teeth at risk for infections. At Platte Valley Dental Care, we can treat cavities, restoring the health of your mouth, with composite fillings. Fillings are a part of a General Dentistry procedure.

Composite Fillings

Traditionally, cavities have been treated with amalgam fillings. These fillings have been in use for over 150 years. They are made up of a mixture of different metals including tin, silver, copper, and nickel. These metals are suspended in liquid mercury. When cured, or hardened, amalgam fillings are exceptionally strong and can withstand the strongest biting forces. While strong, amalgam fillings do have a few significant drawbacks. Amalgam fillings are silver in color, making them stand out in your smile. The metal content can cause reactions in those that have allergies and sensitivities. The mercury content also causes concerns for many patients. Composite fillings are a more recent alternative to amalgam fillings. These fillings use composite resin to fill cavities. Composite resin is a metal-free material made up of plastic, fine glass, and other materials. It is a fairly strong material that matches the color of your teeth. Once in place, no one will be able to tell that it is there, making it ideal for cavities in the teeth visible when you smile.

Placing Composite Fillings

Placing composite fillings is a straightforward procedure that can typically be completed in less than 30 minutes. First, the tooth is cleaned, and the decay is cleared away from the cavity. Composite resin bonds to the tooth, so less of your tooth structure needs to be drilled away than with amalgam fillings. Depending upon the size and the location of your cavity, you may not need a local anesthetic. After the decay has been cleaned out of the tooth, an acid etch is applied. This acid creates a rough texture, which helps to enhance the bond between the composite resin and your tooth. The acid is washed off, and the tooth is dried. We then fill the cavity with the composite resin material and cure it. Finally, the filling is polished smooth, providing a seamless restoration of your tooth.

The Benefits of Composite Fillings

Composite fillings provide numerous benefits, including:
•  Composite resin matches the color of your natural tooth enamel.
•  The material can stand up to most normal daily use.
•  Rather than simply sitting inside the cavity, composite resin bonds with your tooth, meaning less natural structure needs to be removed.
•  Composite resin does not contain any metals or any mercury.
•  The material is not sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

How Can I Prevent Cavities?

Cavities can be prevented. A good oral hygiene routine is essential. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once daily. In addition to taking care of your mouth at home, you should have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined at least twice a year. If you are prone to cavities, we can also provide fluoride treatment and sealants to help further protect the health of your mouth. If you have a cavity, it is important that you get treatment as soon as possible.
