Crowns (Normal) Platte City, MO
Dental crowns are arguably the most popular dental prosthetics among our patients here at Platte Valley Dental Care. Dental crown treatment has come a long way and has continued to improve over the decades to become one of the most effective remedies for damaged teeth. Whether you have a dental cavity, a broken tooth, or you’ve completely , a dental crown will certainly do you justice.
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped prosthetics that are fitted over a damaged or broken tooth after it has been disinfected and reshaped. Dental crowns are also placed over dental implants to fill up the tooth gap left after you’ve lost a tooth.
Dental Crown Procedure
The placement of a dental crown usually takes two appointments at most. It depends on the extent of damage on the tooth being repaired. During the first visit, our dentist will examine your damaged tooth and carry out any treatment procedures necessary. In the case of a decayed tooth, our dentist will first remove all of the decayed material from the tooth and disinfect it.
The tooth is then reshaped into a plug-like or pin-like shape so that it can be attached to the crown. For broken or fractured teeth, our dentist will remove any loose fractures from the tooth and reshape it as described above. The plug-like tooth is referred to as an abutment. The tooth must still be strongly anchored into the jawbone for it to be used as an abutment. If the tooth is significantly loose and there’s no way to salvage it, our dentist will most likely recommend extraction and dental implant placement before the crown is fitted.
For those who have been unfortunate enough to completely lose their tooth, or they had to have it extracted, they have to first undergo a dental implant placement procedure. This procedure is a bit complicated and may take up to several months. It involves planting a titanium post into your jawbone at the tooth gap left behind. The post also has a plug-shape attachment at the top, which is referred to as an abutment.
Once this initial phase of the treatment is complete, our dentist will take an impression of the tooth gap and abutment, and send it to the lab so that your crown can be made. You will need to have a temporary crown while you wait for the crown to be ready. The permanent crown is attached on the second appointment. The crown can be made of porcelain, ceramic, gold, silver, or resin. If you want the crown to match with your natural teeth, porcelain and ceramic are a great option. Gold and silver have a very distinctive color, but they are usually quite attractive. The crown is attached to the abutment using a special type of dental adhesive.
Benefits of Crowns
There are many benefits to getting your damaged teeth crowned. To begin with, crowns are permanent, and when the procedure is done by professionals like us, they will function just like your healthy natural teeth, and last for decades. Even if you have completely lost your tooth, the crowned dental implant will function perfectly. Crowns are also quite effective in restoring the aesthetic appeal of your teeth. A good number of patients opt for crowns for cosmetic reasons.
