Dentures

Your teeth do a lot for you every single day. They make it possible to bite and chew a variety of different foods, enabling you to enjoy a vast array of different flavors and textures. The teeth control airflow when you speak. They also play a significant role in the quality of your smile. When you lose your teeth, all of these functions are affected. At Platte Valley Dental Care, we offer options to replace your missing teeth. One of these options is dentures.

Causes of Tooth Loss

Gum, or periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss. When gum disease advances, your gums pull away from your teeth, creating pockets. Bacteria fall into these pockets and begin attacking your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone. These supporting structures weaken, and your teeth become loose, eventually falling out. Other causes of tooth loss include:
•  Facial trauma, such as a fall or a sports injury.
•  Severe tooth decay, which often leads to the need for extractions.
•  Bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of your teeth.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are a common treatment for replacing missing teeth that has been around for centuries. Modern dentures are very different from the original dentures, although the basic premise is still the same. Dentures are a removable prosthesis that consists of a base, which sits on the gums, and holds your replacement teeth. Dentures have undergone numerous improvements over the years, and the ones used today look much more like real teeth and feel much less awkward and bulky in the mouth. The base is made of acrylic, which can be colored to perfectly match the color of your natural gum tissue. The teeth are an acrylic resin and can be specifically designed to look completely natural. There are two types of dentures, full dentures, and partial dentures.

Full Arch Replacement

Full dentures are often what comes to mind when people think about dentures. These dentures are made to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Before taking digital impressions of your mouth, any unhealthy teeth remaining in the arch first need to be extracted. The impressions we take are used to custom design and create your dentures. When your dentures are ready, we check to make sure that they sit properly on your gums, which provide the support necessary for your new teeth to function correctly.

What Are Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are a type of denture that replaces a section of missing teeth, enabling your healthy teeth to remain right where they are. They are made similarly to full dentures. After the removal of any unhealthy teeth, impressions are taken, and your denture is custom created. In addition to an acrylic base and acrylic resin teeth, partial dentures also have metal clasps that attach to your healthy teeth to help provide extra support for your replacement teeth.

The Benefits of Dentures

Dentures offer several benefits, including:
•  They restore your ability to bite and chew. This helps to improve digestion and nutrition.
•  Your speech is restored.
•  You regain your smile and your confidence.
•  Partial dentures help to hold your healthy teeth in proper alignment, preventing shifting.
