|When we ask our patients if they know how to brush their teeth, we get puzzled looks and answers of 'Of course!” but the truth is, many people do not know how to brush their teeth using proper techniques.
Not to worry, even though brushing is a little more complicated that simply using a tooth brush and tooth paste, we are here to point out some of the important techniques that you can work into your oral hygiene routine.
The best way to make sure that you are keeping a healthy mouth is to take your time. Do not rush your oral hygiene routine. Spend plenty of time flossing in between each tooth, making sure to get below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar build up. Choose a toothpaste that has been approved by the American Dental Association (preferably one with fluoride) and spend at least two minutes brushing each tooth.
We recommend brushing in small circles on each tooth for a couple of different reasons. The first is that this slows your process down. Brushing side to side, it is easy to gloss over too many teeth at once, which does not provide you with adequate brushing on each tooth. Slowing it down and making small circular brushes on just a couple of teeth at a time ensures that you are getting every surface of every tooth.
Another reason we recommend circular strokes is that this ensures that you are not only cleaning the teeth, but you are brushing the gums as well. This improves circulation as well as cleans the plaque and bacteria away from your gums, reducing your risk of developing periodontal disease.
