Dental Implants Placement
To place a dental implant in your jawbone, your dentist will first take scans to assess the health and structure of your jawbone. In case your jawbone shows signs of an injury or a fracture, your dentist will first recommend bone grafting surgery to repair your jawbone. In a bone grafting surgery, a small piece of bone is extracted from another part of your body, such as the hips, legs, or chest, to graft it in the fractured jawbone. A bone grafting surgery before the placement of dental implants is very common among those who have suffered severe facial traumas.
However, if the scans show that your jawbone is in good health and condition, your dentist will proceed to place the dental implants inside your jawbone. First, your dentist will thoroughly clean the area to remove bacteria and food debris. A small hole will be made inside your gums and all the way down to your jawbone to create space for the dental implant. The metal screw that will act as the artificial root for your replacement tooth will be inserted into the hole, and part of it will protrude out of the gums.
After the dental implant surgery, you will be sent back home. Dental implants need at least 3 months to fuse completely with the jawbone and form a strong foundation for your new teeth. This process is known as osseointegration. Without osseointegration, your replacement teeth will not have strong roots to hold them in place. Once the dental implant has osseointegrated into the jawbone, your dentist will attach a small metal extension (abutment) to the implant and fix your new tooth on it.
The replacement tooth, along with the dental implant, looks and functions just like a real tooth. Depending on the number of your missing teeth and their position, you may require either a single tooth implant or multiple teeth implants, but the procedure remains the same.
